research for documentary

Fast Food AddictionHamburgers and French fries could be as addictive as heroin, scientists have claimed.
'Cold turkey'
They found that rats fed a diet containing 25% sugar are thrown into a state of anxiety when the sugar is removed.
Their symptoms included chattering teeth and the shakes - similar to those seen in people withdrawing from nicotine or morphine, according to researchers.
Dr Hoebel said he believed high-fat foods stimulate opioids or 'pleasure chemicals' in the brain.
"The implication is that some animals - and by extension some people - can become overly dependent on sweet food," he said.
Further studies published in New Scientist magazine back up this theory.

Primary Research: Locations for interviews; • Colleges • Coffee Shops • Smoking areas • Pubs • Beauty Salons • Make up stores • Cafés Suitable mise-en-scene for interviews; Background of coffee, beauty products, sweets and chocolate, cigarettes. Formal proposal for documentary

Formal proposal
Dear Channel 4,
I am writing to you in order to propose my documentary to your industry. The topic of my documentary is Everyday Addiction. It will cover the topics of smoking, caffeine, beauty and social networking. Everyone will have their own specific stance on the subjects that will be raised within the documentary. It will also show a wide range of ages and the specific opinions of the vary within my target audience.
I will use a variety of techniques for example, interviews, voxpops, cutaways, and archive footage. I will also include conventions such as fade to blacks, cutaways and dissolves using Adobe Premiere.
The reason I have chosen Channel 4 is because it has an amazing reputation for creating similar documentaries that are often aimed at a similar target audience to mine, also the majority of their documentaries are mixed which is the same as mine.
The style of my documentary is Original with elements of Archival. It would be scheduled to be shown at 9pm, I have decided to schedule my documentary at 9pm as it is a perfect time to engage with my target audience, it is a common time for children to be going to bed and adults and teenagers to be winding down and looking for something to settle down and watch on TV before they go to sleep which is a perfect time as it will appeal to my target audience and also probably ensure that the issues raised will provoke thought from my audience.
The primary research I am going to use is various interviewees that are fitted into my target audience age range, this will appeal to my target audience and attract the right age and type of people. I will use the correct props and film my interviews in places featuring the suited mise-en-scene. I will include suited archive footage and use extracts from films that will be related to my documentary. I will also use facts and statistics in my voiceover and my documentary film. As well as this I will aim to challenge codes and conventions of documentaries in order to attract my audience and ensure my film is different and an outstanding production.
The resources I will use are a stills camera, a camera to film interviews, editing features and suitable locations to film interviews and footage.
As my documentary is aimed at young people it will be a fast paced informative and interactive film. Even though my target audience is between the ages of 16 and 18 with the features that I aim to use I will create a documentary that will appeal to anyone over the age of 16. The topics that are covered appeal to many ages and all different kinds of people as it gives an insight to the every-day lives of people.

Target Audience Research graphs

Target Audience Research

In order to find specific results regarding our target audience research we decided to produce a questionnaire which entails questions regarding the topics and subjects for our documentary. The results from this questionnaire will show us the different types of "addictions" that a variety of people of different ages have. Which in turn will also relate to the demographic and psychographic profiles of our target audience and in our results we will be able to find out what factors encourage different people's habits and addictions.

Within our group we developed a series of questions related to the different sectors within our documentary.

  1. Are you male or female?
  2. What age range are you in?
    16-18
    19+
  3. Which of these do you seem to use the most?
    Alcohol
    Cigarettes
    Fast Food
    Coffee
    Cars/Mechanics
    Beauty/Fashion
    Social Networking
    Sex
  4. Are you employed?
  5. On average how much do you spend on your habit/"Addiction"
    0-5
    6-10
    11-20
    21-30
    30+
  6. What area of Warrington do you live in?
  7. What is your ethnic origin?
  8. How often do you engage with your habit/"addiction"?
  9. What time of day is this most likely?
  10. What influences do you have regarding hobbies?
    Media
    Friends
    Family
    College/work
    Self
  11. Why do you take part or engage with this hobby/"addiction"?
  12. How do you gain access to the supplies needed to satisfy your hobby/"addiction"

Initial Plans

Topic: Everyday Addiction

Target Audience: Males and Females between the ages of 16 and 34 as the demographic for channel 4 is between the ages of 16 and 34 so this will suit the channel for our documentary

Title: Fix- Nation

Target Audience Reaearch:

  • Gender, Sexual orientation, Religion, Class;
For our documentary the demographic profile with be a mixture of all different religions, classes, sexual orientations and both male and females. As we want a mixture of footage from all walks of life to explore the difference in everyday addictions it would be good for us to interview and look into the different demographic profiles for people within our target audience range.

The psychographic profile for our documentary comes into the age range, as the social class and the way of life of our audience could change through time. This fits in well with the research we are doing as it shows that the addictions of people change throughout their lives.

The Channel for our documentary would be channel 4 as they usually host documentaries about everyday life and we feel that the topic of our documentary will fit in well with the usual programmes that appear on Channel 4.

The Schedule for this documentary will be 9 o'clock as it may feature some bad language or footage that might not be suitable for younger children and since our audience is between 16 and 34 these ages are most likely to watch it at this time and younger children are less likely to be watching TV at this time.

Brainstorming

This is a brainstorm of the possible ideas i could use when considering the topic of my documentary, they are the few that i think would be relevent to my group and would also be interesting to study.

In the beginning we came up with 5 ideas on the topic of our documentary here are the 5 ideas and why they could have been good and why they maybe wouldn't have worked;

Music: (+) Alot of people listen to music
(+) Alot of choice through styles of music
(+) Accessable through college

(-) Music is a wide catagory and there is alot to cover
(-) Everyone likes different music and it is hard to find balance
(-) Hard to get facts and famous musicians to film

Chavs and gangs:
(+) Could break stereoypoes
(+) Gives an insight to the lives of chavs
(+) Showing youths how they could end up without education etc

(-) They may not respond well to interviews
(-) Could create stereotypes
(-) Could be dangeourous

Everyday Addiction:
(+) Covers a wide variety of topics
(+) A lot of people have an everyday addiction
(+) Easy to get footage and stills

(-) Some people may not want to be filmed and interviewed
(-) Could be offensive or disturbing to some people
(-) Could be quite explicit

Sport:
(+) Easy to collect information about
(+) Accessable in college
(+) Alot of archive footage that can be used

(-) Not alot of people are into sport as much anymore
(-) Sport is not the most popular choice of hobby anymore
(-) Could be difficult to find people who play proffesional sport

Wildlife:
(+) Wildlife occurs everywhere
(+) Easy to find some sort of wildlife
(+) Could be locally filmed

(-) Hard to get permission from wildlife institutions
(-) Difficult to find a wide variety of wildlife and animals
(-) Could be dangerous to film
